As Mother’s Day approaches, it makes me stop and think how lucky I am to have such an amazing mum. With her help (and Dad’s), she has enabled me to achieve my dream to be working in my own clinic as a Naturopath.
Growing up, Mum was one of those mothers who had us playing music, taking part in sports (tennis and horse riding) and making sure we were excelling at school. She had all bases covered and wanted me to have the best. From a very young age she instilled in me that if I set my mind to achieve something and wanted to achieve it badly enough, the sky was the limit.
Mum demonstrated that first hand when she returned to university on a full time basis. Might I add, this was when both my brother and I were still at school and Dad was often traveling interstate and overseas for work. She managed to get ‘high distinctions’ for all of her classes, while still managing to keep us kids happy with home cooked meals and a well kept home. It was her dream to become a Chiropractor, and nothing was going to get in her way. I don't think I know anyone else with as much determination as my Mum.
Once I finished my Science degree, it was Mum who said, “…who cares if you have to study another four years for Naturopathy - if it’s your dream, go for it, I'm here to support you”. I knew as soon as I started studying Naturopathy that my ultimate dream would be to open a clinic with mum. I could not think of a better person to work with.
Our clinic recently had its 2nd birthday on 1 May. People always question us, wondering what it's like working together. I guess some people couldn't think of anything worse and think I may respond with something that would support this thought! However, the complete opposite is true. Mum is not only my mother - she is my colleague, my business partner and most importantly, my best friend.
To Mum,
Working with you has been the best two years of my life. I can’t wait to see what the next 20 years bring.
Love, Sam
