Myotherapist in Bentleigh

Myotherapists are highly skilled healthcare professionals that use a range of techniques to assess and address muscular pain, injuries and dysfunction. During a myotherapy session, your therapist will conduct a thorough assessment to understand the possible underlying causes of your muscular pain or injury. Your assessment may involve evaluating your range of motion, structural integrity and causes of pain.

Based on assessment findings your myotherapist will develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. They will employ various hands-on techniques including deep tissue techniques, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, and muscle energy technique.

In addition to manual therapies, they may also utilise alternative targeted techniques. These may include dry needling and dynamic cupping.

During your myotherapy session, we may also provide you with corrective exercises and home advice designed to support your recovery and enhance your overall functionality. The exercises aim to address muscle imbalances, improve strength and flexibility, and prevent future injuries.

Your Myotherapy Questions Answered

What happens in a typical myotherapy session?

During a typical myotherapy session, your myotherapist will familiarise themselves with your medical history. They will then conduct an assessment aiming to determine the cause of your concerns or pain to tailor a treatment plan to your needs. Your myotherapist may use several different treatment methods depending on your body. These treatments may include trigger point therapy, dry needling, stretching exercises, and massage.

Is myotherapy painful?

Myotherapy is not usually painful. Depending on the treatments used, you may experience some slight short-term pain or soreness after stretching or massage. However, each treatment is designed to target the cause of your discomfort to reduce pain or help accelerate recovery from injury. Likewise, some people express minor discomfort with dry needling, but it differs for each person.

Is myotherapy covered by Medicare?

Medicare does not cover myotherapy. It may be covered under some private health funds, but this differs depending on your plan and level of cover.

What is the difference between a myotherapy massage and a remedial massage session?

A remedial massage therapist uses massage techniques to target soft tissue to address issues with your muscles. This is a targeted approach to addressing pain and relieving muscle tension.

Myotherapy massage therapists focus on treating more complex musculoskeletal conditions. Their approach is used to improve mobility by targeting joints and increasing muscle flexibility.  Myotherapists still use soft tissue massage techniques but also employ other modalities such as cupping, dry needling, mobilisation, various electrotherapies and exercise prescription.
